Our Story

From Physiotherapist to Travel Blogger – Story of WaylessTravelers

Our story and timeline starting from our first time in an airplane to when we founded waylesstravelers

Hello, we are Ryan and Nan,
two Canadian travel adventurers and photographers.

We started traveling late into our lives at the age of 21, but the moment we got off the plane, we knew that traveling was our passion. Since then, we’ve visited over 23 countries from South East Asia, to Europe, and more recently South America.

The wanderlust was always there, but we forced ourselves to quash those ‘dreams’ since we had to ‘grow up’ and follow the ‘societal norms’ of developing a career, getting married, having children etc…

Given our passion and educational background as physical therapists,

We decided to open a physical therapy clinic and help others get back to the best versions of themselves.
Over 5 years, we built a team of 9 therapists and felt fulfilled being able to help people recover following injuries.

But no matter how hard we tried, that little voice would be there reminding us of our dreams.

So we tried to supplement that wanderlust by learning photography.

Through the lens, I could see the world differently, capturing the beauty of things I’ve walked past a hundred times. As I learned more and more, so did improve my photography to better capture the emotions and stories of special moments.

We then traveled with my camera in hand. I began to see the people, the landscapes, and the cultures in a different way. And it only further exposed my desire for new experiences.

Eventually, we came to the realization that we just don’t fit into the societal norm.

Truth is, we didn’t want to spend our weekends lounging around recovering from the 9-5.

Although we loved our job and helping people, we yearned for new adventures, new experiences, and new surprises. We felt trapped in a big city when all we wanted to do was climb up mountain peaks, rappel down cliffs, and encounter new cultures.

But what about the 9-5? this is what life is no? We tried to ground ourselves again.

But then we went to Peru and Guatemala and everything changed. Despite only spending 2 weeks in each country, we felt so alive, so connected, in such a community, and so excited. From the food, to the language, to nature, it’s as if all our senses awoke. Our travels in South America further ignited our desire to help the local communities and indigenous people.

There is so much beauty out there. If only there could be a way to allay the fear and misconceptions, and share with the world all these marvels.

So we took the leap.

We sold our Physical Therapy practice and decided to begin this journey.

Given my passion for photography, obsessively detailed travel planning, and curiosity for adventure; and my wife’s passion for connecting with foreign cultures, humanitarian projects, and travel storytelling, starting a travel blog seemed the right choice.

So follow along and join in on our journey, because we will definitely have a lot of stories to tell.
