18 Unmissable Things to do in Namibia

After spending over two weeks exploring Namibia, we’ve narrowed down our top must-do experiences. Namibia offers an amazing variety of adventures—from unique lodges and unforgettable wildlife encounters to camping under endless skies filled with more stars than you can imagine. We can’t wait to share this incredible list with you!

1) See the Incredible wildlife of Etosha National Park

One of the biggest highlights of any trip to Namibia is undoubtedly the iconic Etosha National Park. When we were deciding which safari destination to visit in Africa, Etosha stood out for its affordability, incredible waterhole game viewing, and the rare option to self-drive through the reserve. After spending four unforgettable days there, we can confidently say it was one of the best experiences of our lives!

Picture this: you park under a tree for a quick lunch break, enjoying the serene landscape, when suddenly you notice other cars stopping nearby. You take a second look and—wait, is that a lion lounging right there? It was. Hiding in plain sight. That lunch turned into four hours of watching the lion interact with a nearby herd of elephants. Pure magic!

While Etosha might not have the overwhelming abundance of wildlife seen in places like South Africa or Tanzania, it more than makes up for it with its mesmerizing waterhole game-viewing experiences.

2) Explore the Majestic Sand dunes of Sossusvlei

The second big reason we were drawn to Namibia? Deadvlei and Sossusvlei.

I still remember stumbling across a desktop wallpaper of Deadvlei and thinking, “Is this even Earth? It looks like another planet!”. Turns out it’s in Namibia, and it instantly shot to the top of our bucket list.

Sossusvlei turned out to be one of our absolute favorite experiences in Namibia! From exploring the ancient clay pan dotted with eerie petrified trees that are hundreds of years old, to climbing the iconic orange sand dunes, and stargazing under a Milky Way that looks straight out of a sci-fi movie—the overall experience here is otherwordly.

For the ultimate once-in-a-lifetime experience, you can even take a hot air balloon ride or a private flight over Sossusvlei for jaw-dropping views.

4) Explore the Petrified Trees of Deadvlei

Deadvlei absolutely deserves its own spotlight.

After traveling to over 40 countries, I can confidently say I’ve never seen anything quite like it.

Picture this: a cracked white clay pan, scattered with hauntingly beautiful black petrified camelthorn trees that have stood frozen in time for hundreds of years, all set against a backdrop of towering, glowing orange sand dunes. It’s otherworldly—like stepping onto an alien planet.

We were so mesmerized that we spent a solid 3-4 hours wandering around, snapping photos, and soaking in every angle as the sun climbed higher in the sky. Truly a place that defies description and has to be experienced to be believed!

Even reaching it is a whole adventure, involving off-roading through sand, with the ever-lingering risk that your SUV may get stuck. We go through all of this and provide tips on how to reach there safely in our Sossusvlei Guide!

5) Kayak with Seals in Swakopmund

Seals… in a safari country? You bet!

On Namibia’s western coast in Swakopmund, you can actually kayak alongside these playful creatures. We’ll admit, we were a bit hesitant at first—activities like this always raise questions about ethics and animal welfare. But this turned out to be hands-down our favorite experience in Swakopmund!

The adventure kicks off with an off-roading tour through a hidden bay dotted with hundreds of flamingos (yes, flamingos in a safari country too!). From there, you head to the tip of a sandy peninsula where a massive seal colony awaits. Once suited up, you hop into your kayak and paddle out, where the real fun begins.

Seals, as it turns out, are like the puppies of the ocean—curious, playful, and ready to nibble on anything you stick their way. For about an hour, you get up close and personal with these marine pups before heading back for a well-deserved warm drink and snacks.

What made the experience even better? It’s run with great care to minimize any impact on the seal colony. One of the guides even spends his free time rescuing seal pups tangled in fishing lines. A heartwarming, unforgettable adventure!

6) Sandwich Harbour

Namibia is a land of jaw-dropping extremes. From ancient clay pans with petrified trees in the heart of the desert, seals frolicking in a safari country, to colossal sand dunes crashing straight into the Atlantic Ocean. Yep, you read that right—this is one of the only places on Earth where you can witness such a spectacle!

Just off the coast of Swakopmund lies Sandwich Harbour, where the desert meets the sea in a breathtaking collision. But getting there? That’s half the thrill. You’ll climb aboard a custom-built, off-road dune-bashing SUV and hang on tight as you race up and down towering dunes. It’s like a roller coaster, but with sand!

Opt for the full-day tour, and you’ll get to enjoy lunch in one of the most surreal settings imaginable: surrounded by endless desert on one side and the crashing waves of the Atlantic on the other.

Fun fact: this spot was so unique, they used it as a filming location for Dune. Thankfully, no subterranean sandworms made an appearance during our visit!

7) Enjoy Amazing Seafood in Swakopmund

After a week of munching on biltong and game meat, we were practically doing a happy dance when we discovered Swakopmund’s incredible seafood scene. This coastal gem is packed with seafood restaurants, but the one that stole our hearts (and stomachs) was Ocean Cellar, tucked right below the swanky Strand Hotel.

How good was it, you ask? So good that we ended up eating there three nights in a row! From abalone risotto to fresh oysters with creative twists, and even a divine monkfish pasta, every dish was a winner.

8) Experience a Private Game Lodge and their Sundowners

Let’s talk about the animals of Namibia again—because honestly, they’re the stars of the show! Spotting wildlife on a self-drive safari in Etosha is unforgettable, but staying at one of the private game lodges just outside the park? That’s next-level magic.

These lodges aren’t just about plush accommodations (though they are beautifully decked out in cultural African decor that immerses you in the vibe). They’re about the whole experience: think guided game drives with expert trackers, scenic bush walks, and the ultimate safari ritual—sundowners.

It’s incredible. the vehicle stops, you step onto the golden-hued safari soil, gin and tonic in hand, and watch the sky blaze into fiery oranges as the sun dips below the horizon.

At first, we thought private lodges were just fancy places to sleep, but nope—they’re an adventure all on their own. Worth every penny, and then some!

9) Spitzkoppe – Star Gazing and Stunning Rocks

Spitzkoppe completely blew us away—it was one of those unexpected gems in Namibia!

At first, we thought it would just be a nice pit stop for wild camping between Swakopmund and Etosha. But wow, it turned out to be one of the most unforgettable nights of our entire trip.

Out here, in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by massive orange rock formations, the night sky transforms into a dazzling display of millions of stars. It was so clear that the entire Milky Way stretched across the sky, and we were left in complete awe.

Honestly, it’s one of the most jaw-dropping views I’ve ever seen.

Come morning, you can roam the rugged terrain, discover ancient rock art, or just take in the surreal landscape.

If you’re looking for a hidden gem in Namibia, this is it!

10) self-drive 4×4 camping safari

We have done our fair share of road trips, including through the National Parks in Utah and Arizona, but nothing compares to our 4×4 adventure through Namibia.

Renting our own 4×4 SUV, equipped with a rooftop tent, allowed us to freely explore the country and stay amidst some of the most unique landscapes. A self-drive camping trip is truly the way to experience Namibia!

From setting up camp under the towering cliffs of Spitzkoppe, cooking up a Braai dinner by the campfire, sipping on cocktails while munching on biltong at sunset, to sleeping atop our car, drifting off to the sounds of lions and hyenas in the distance—it was an experience like no other.

This was our first time traveling this way, and we can guarantee it won’t be our last!

11) Marvel at the Milky Way

Namibia is a true star-gazer’s paradise, boasting some of the world’s best Dark Sky Zones with minimal light pollution. This means you get to experience jaw-dropping views of the night sky, with the stars and Milky Way shining brighter than you’ve ever seen.

Milky way, sky full of stars in Spitzkoppe

You’ve already heard about our unforgettable time in Spitzkoppe, but we also had epic views in Sossusvlei. Whether you’re in Spitzkoppe, Sossusvlei, Quiver Tree Forest, Fish River Canyon, or any of Namibia’s remote spots, the night sky here will leave you in awe!

It’s a stargazing experience that’ll truly change your life!

12) Track the desert elephants in Damaraland

Tracking the desert elephants in Damaraland is an experience that fellow travelers rave about, and after hearing their stories, we can totally see why!

Imagine venturing into the remote wilderness, guided by skilled trackers who know these majestic elephants like the back of their hand. As you traverse the desert landscape, you’re likely to spot these incredible creatures making their way across the rugged terrain, perfectly adapted to this harsh environment.

And after a day of adventure, you can unwind at the unique Camp Kipwe, nestled among the boulders with stunning views of the desert. From what we’ve heard, it’s an unforgettable way to experience Namibia’s wild side!

13) Rock paintings at Twyfelfontain

Visiting the ancient rock paintings at Twyfelfontain is something that was highly recommended from fellow travelers we met during our trip!

These 6,000-year-old masterpieces, carved into the rock by the indigenous San people, are a fascinating glimpse into the past civilizations. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed treasure, and exploring it with a knowledgeable guide makes it even more special.

Afterward, you can relax at Twyfelfontain Adventure Camp, where you’re surrounded by the stunning desert landscape. From what we’ve heard, it’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in Namibia’s history and nature, all while enjoying the warmth of a cozy camp under the stars.

We didn’t get to visit here since we already saw rock paintings in Spitzkoppe, but we would love to explore here when we return to Namibia!

14) Explore a Safari on a Bush Walk

If a safari from the safety of a vehicle isn’t immersive enough for you, then why not take it to the next level with an African Bush Walk?

On a bush walk, you’re out there on foot, walking the very same terrain as lions and cheetahs, with nothing but your boots and a skilled guide to keep you grounded. It’s a humbling experience that lets you connect with the land on a deeper level, paying attention to the small details of the African wilderness that often go unnoticed.

The goal here isn’t to spot a lion (in fact, you’d prefer not to!) but to immerse yourself in the delicate ecosystem and discover the smaller, often overlooked creatures that make this landscape so special.

To experience a bush walk, check out these standout private lodges outside Etosha.

15) See the Hippos in Caprivi

While we didn’t personally get to experience this one, we’ve heard rave reviews from fellow travelers about seeing the hippos at Caprivi, especially while staying at the Chobe Water Villas.

Imagine waking up to the sound of hippos grunting in the distance, the perfect soundtrack to your stay at this peaceful riverside retreat. From your villa, you can enjoy front-row seats to one of Africa’s most fascinating wildlife shows, as the hippos emerge from the water to graze on the lush vegetation.

Hippos in the water

Whether you’re sipping a drink on your deck or enjoying a boat safari, the experience of being so close to these incredible creatures is truly unforgettable. In Namibia, this region is the sole spot where you’ll encounter hippos and other water-loving wildlife.

16) Abandoned mining town of Kolmanskop

Kolmanskop is one of those places that feels straight out of a dream—or perhaps a hauntingly beautiful nightmare.

Once a bustling diamond mining town in the heart of the Namib Desert, it’s now a ghost town being slowly devoured by sand dunes. Though we didn’t get to visit ourselves, it’s been highly recommended by travelers who described it as both eerie and captivating.

Walking through the abandoned buildings, with sunlight streaming through broken windows and sand piling into every corner, is like stepping into another world.

Guided tours provide a deeper understanding of its history, sharing tales of the town’s diamond boom, lavish lifestyles, and ultimate decline. It’s a surreal reminder of how quickly nature can reclaim what was once hers.

17) Quiver Tree Forest

The Quiver Tree Forest near Keetmanshoop is a surreal and iconic destination, especially for star photography.

Quiver Tree Forest in Namibia

These unique trees, actually a species of aloe, got their name because the San people used their hollowed-out branches as quivers for their arrows. By day, explore the otherworldly shapes of these ancient giants, and by night, marvel at the stunning Milky Way as it frames the spiky silhouettes.

It’s one of Namibia’s most magical spots, perfect for photographers and stargazers alike.

18) Fish River Canyon, One of the World’s largest Canyon

Fish River Canyon, one of the world’s largest canyons, is a sight that will leave you in awe. Its dramatic cliffs and layered rock formations stretch endlessly, showcasing millions of years of geological history.

Whether you’re standing at the edge of the viewpoints or hiking along its rugged trails, the sheer scale is absolutely breathtaking. As the sun sets, the canyon comes alive with vibrant hues of orange and gold, making it a dream for photographers. It’s one of Namibia’s most iconic natural wonders.

While there, make sure to stay at the Fish River Lodge!

Using WISE card in Namibia

When taking cash out of an ATM while abroad, you will most likely be charged both a foreign exchange fee and a foreign transaction fee by that country’s ATM. With my Canadian card, this can easily be 3-4$ + 2.75% + a markup on the exchange rate charged by my bank, and then another 3-5$ charged by the foreign ATM.

Wise card

This can be really costly. For this reason, we recommend using WISE card which has only minimal fees and just about no foreign currency exchange markup. This helps me save at least 5-7$ every time I take out money from an ATM. If you want to see our full review of the card showing exactly how WISE can help you save, check out our WISE Travel card Review post.
