Every single day felt like a dream, like we were transported to an entirely different planet. Having now travelled through Namibia for over 2 weeks, and researched every possible hidden gem in this beautiful country, we have rounded up the top 18 unforgettable things to do in Namibia. 18 Unmissable Things to do in Namibia

After spending over two weeks exploring Namibia, we’ve narrowed down our top must-do experiences! Namibia offers an amazing variety of adventures, from unique lodges and unforgettable wildlife encounters to camping under the sky filled with more stars than you can imagine. We can’t wait to share this incredible list with you!

1) See the Incredible wildlife of Etosha National Park

One of the biggest highlights of any trip to Namibia is undoubtedly the iconic Etosha National Park. When we were deciding which safari destination to visit in Africa, Etosha stood out for its affordability, incredible waterhole game viewing, and the rare option to self-drive through the reserve (Another amazing option is exploring Kruger National Park in South Africa!). After spending four unforgettable days in Etosha, we can confidently say it was one of the best experiences of our lives!

Picture this: you park nearby a tree for a quick lunch break, enjoying the peaceful landscape, when suddenly you notice other cars stopping nearby. You take a second look and, wait, is that a lion lounging right there? It was. Hiding in plain sight but perfectly camouflaged amongst the yellow grass. That quick lunch turned into four hours of us waiting for the lion to wake up, and eventually seeing an incredible spectacle as the lion got challenged by a herd of elephants! These are the type of magical moments you’ll get to experience in Etosha!

While Etosha might not have the overwhelming abundance of wildlife seen in places like South Africa’s Kruger National Park or Tanzania’s Serengeti, it more than makes up for it with its mesmerizing waterhole game-viewing experiences. Instead of tracking animals across the vast safari, you can simply relax by a watering hole and let the wildlife come to you!

2) Explore the Majestic Sand dunes of Sossusvlei

The second biggest reason we were drawn to Namibia? Deadvlei and Sossusvlei.

I still remember stumbling across a desktop wallpaper of Deadvlei and thinking, “Is this even Earth? It looks like another planet!”. Turns out it’s in Namibia, and it instantly shot to the top of our bucket list.

Sossusvlei turned out to be one of our absolute favourite experiences in Namibia! From exploring the ancient clay pan dotted with eerie petrified trees that are hundreds of years old, to climbing the iconic orange sand dunes, and stargazing under a Milky Way, the overall experience here is completely otherworldly.

For the ultimate once-in-a-lifetime experience, you can even take a hot air balloon ride or a private flight over Sossusvlei for jaw-dropping views.

🧳 Essential Packing List for Namibia – Packing for Namibia is not as simple as throwing a few clothes into a bag. Between the blazing desert heat, freezing desert nights, safari drives in Etosha, and adventure activities in Swakopmund, you will need gear for all kinds of conditions. In this guide we share our complete Namibia packing list and the tips that helped us stay prepared during our trip.

4) Explore the Petrified Trees of Deadvlei

Deadvlei absolutely deserves its own mention!

After traveling to over 45 countries around the world, I can confidently say I’ve never seen anything quite like it.

Deadvlei, with its cracked white clay pan, scattered with hauntingly beautiful black petrified camelthorn trees that have stood frozen in time for hundreds of years, all set against a backdrop of towering, glowing orange sand dunes. It’s absolutely otherworldly, like stepping onto an alien planet.

We were so mesmerized that we spent a solid 3-4 hours wandering around, snapping photos, and soaking in every angle before the sun climbed higher in the sky. This is truly a place that defies description and has to be experienced to be believed!

Even reaching it is a whole adventure, involving off-roading through sand, with the ever-lingering risk that your SUV may get stuck (and ours did get stuck once!). We go through all of this and provide tips on how to reach there safely in our Sossusvlei Guide!

5) Kayak with Seals in Swakopmund

Seals… in a safari country? You heard that right!

On Namibia’s western coast in Swakopmund, you can actually kayak alongside these playful creatures. At first, we were a bit hesitant to join this activity since there are always concerns about ethics and animal welfare. But this turned out to be completely eco-conscious, with a big focus on helping protect these seal colonies, and was hands-down our favorite experience in Swakopmund!

The adventure starts off with an off-roading tour through a hidden bay dotted with hundreds of flamingos (yes, flamingos in a safari country too!). From there, you head to the tip of a sandy peninsula where a massive seal colony awaits. Once suited up with your kayak gear, you hop into your kayak and paddle out, where you’ll get to interact with these curious creatures!

Seals, as it turns out, are like the puppies of the ocean: investigative, playful, and ready to nibble on anything you stick their way. For about an hour, we got up close and personal with these marine pups before heading back for warm drink and snacks.

What made the experience even better? It’s run with great care to minimize any impact on the seal colony. One of the guides even spends his free time rescuing seal pups tangled in fishing lines. It was a heartwarming and unforgettable adventure!

For a full rundown of what to expect on the tour, how to choose the best company, and other essential tips, make sure to check out our full Kayaking with Seals in Swakopmund review!

6) Sandwich Harbour

Namibia seems to be a land of jaw-dropping extremes. One moment you’re standing in an ancient clay pan with petrified trees, then kayaking with seals, to then climbing colossal sand dunes crashing straight into the Atlantic Ocean. Yep, you read that right! This is one of the only places on Earth where you can witness such a spectacle!

Just off the coast of Swakopmund lies Sandwich Harbour, where the desert meets the sea in a breathtaking collision. On this Sandwich Harbour Adventure Tour, you’ll climb aboard a custom-built, off-road dune-bashing SUV and race up and down towering dunes to reach the famous Sandwich Harbour.
Here, you’ll find yourself surrounded by endless dunes, mesmerized as ocean waves crash dramatically against the sand!

Opt for the full-day tour, and you’ll get to enjoy lunch in one of the most surreal settings imaginable!

Fun fact: this spot was so unique, they used it as a filming location for Dune. Thankfully, no subterranean sandworms made an appearance during our visit!

7) Enjoy Amazing Seafood in Swakopmund

After a week of snacking on biltong and game meat, we were thrilled when we discovered Swakopmund’s incredible seafood scene. This coastal town is packed with seafood restaurants, but the one that stole our hearts (and stomachs) was Ocean Cellar, tucked right below the swanky Strand Hotel.

The food there was so good that we ended up eating there three nights in a row! From abalone risotto to fresh oysters with creative twists, sushi, and even a divine monkfish pasta, every dish was a winner. This restaurant was so delicious that we did not even consider going to the more famous The Tug restaurant, which sits right on a wooden pier. If you do want to try it though, make sure to book at least a week in advance, as it is one of Swakopmund’s most popular spots!

8) Experience a Private Game Lodge and their Sundowners

Spotting wildlife on a self-drive safari in Etosha is unforgettable, but staying at one of the private game lodges turned out to be just as incredible of an experience.

These lodges aren’t just about plush accommodations (though they are beautifully decked out in cultural African decor that immerses you in the African surroundings). They’re about the whole experience: guided game drives with expert trackers, scenic bush walks where you get to walk on the African safari, bush dinners where you dine amongst the wild animals, and the ultimate safari ritual: sundowners.

These were the favourite parts of our day! The vehicle stops, you step onto the golden-hued safari soil, gin and tonic in hand, and watch the sky turn into hues of fiery orange as the sun dips below the horizon.

At first, we thought private lodges were just fancy places to sleep in, but turns out it absolutely enhances the total experience!

9) Spitzkoppe – Star Gazing and Stunning Rocks

Spitzkoppe completely blew us away! It was one of those unexpected gems in Namibia!

At first, we thought it would just be a nice pit stop for wild camping between Swakopmund and Etosha. But it turned out to be one of the most unforgettable nights of our entire trip.

Out here, in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by massive orange rock formations, the night sky transforms into a dazzling display of millions of stars. It was so clear that the entire Milky Way stretched across the sky, and we were left in complete awe.

Honestly, it’s one of the most jaw-dropping views I’ve ever seen. So much so that we were reluctant to even go to bed. We lay there, in our rooftop tent, staring out to the night sky through the mesh window. It was an absolutely magical experience!

Come morning though, there are adventures awaiting in Spitzkoppe. You can roam the rugged terrain, discover ancient rock art, and visit the famous rock arch similar to the ones we saw during our roadtrip through Utah.

If you’re looking for a hidden gem in Namibia, this is it!

10) self-drive 4×4 camping safari

We have done our fair share of road trips, including through the National Parks in Utah and Arizona, the alien-like landscapes of Atacama Desert in Chile, as well as road tripping through the winding mountains of the Dolomites, but nothing compares to our 4×4 adventure through Namibia.

Renting our own 4×4 SUV, equipped with a rooftop tent, allowed us to freely explore the country and stay amidst some of the most unique landscapes. A self-drive camping trip is truly the best way to experience Namibia!

From setting up camp under the towering cliffs of Spitzkoppe, cooking up a Braai dinner by the campfire, sipping on cocktails while munching on biltong at sunset, to sleeping atop our car, drifting off to the sounds of lions and hyenas in the distance, it was an experience like no other.

This was our first time traveling this way, and we can guarantee it won’t be our last! To this day, having travelled to over 45 countries, our experience here has become the Gold Standard of what we’d like to experience during an epic road trip!

11) Marvel at the Milky Way

Namibia is a true star-gazer’s paradise, boasting some of the world’s best Dark Sky Zones with minimal light pollution. This means you get to experience jaw-dropping views of the night sky, with the stars and Milky Way shining brighter than you’ve ever seen anywhere else.

Milky way, sky full of stars in Spitzkoppe

You’ve already heard about our unforgettable time in Spitzkoppe, but we also had epic views in Sossusvlei. Whether you’re in Spitzkoppe, Sossusvlei, Quiver Tree Forest, Fish River Canyon, or any of Namibia’s remote spots, the night sky here will leave you in complete awe!

It’s a stargazing experience that’ll truly change your life! We also had the chance to Stargazing in another Dark Sky Zone in the Atacama Desert of Chile, but to this day, nothing compares to the incredible skies we saw in Namibia!

12) Track the desert elephants in Damaraland

Tracking the desert elephants in Damaraland is an experience that fellow travelers rave about, and after hearing their stories, we can totally see why!

Imagine venturing into the remote wilderness, guided by skilled trackers who know these majestic elephants like the back of their hand. As you traverse the desert landscape, you may spot these incredible creatures making their way across the rugged terrain, perfectly adapted to this harsh environment.

Desert elephants in Namibia

And after a day of adventure, you can unwind at the unique Camp Kipwe, nestled among the boulders with stunning views of the desert. From what we’ve heard, it’s an unforgettable way to experience Namibia’s wild side!

13) Rock paintings at Twyfelfontain

Visiting the ancient rock paintings at Twyfelfontain is something that was highly recommended from fellow travelers we met during our trip!

These 6,000-year-old masterpieces, carved into the rock by the indigenous San people, are a fascinating glimpse into the past civilizations. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed treasure, and exploring it with a knowledgeable guide makes it even more special.

Afterward, you can relax at Twyfelfontain Adventure Camp, where you’re surrounded by the stunning desert landscape. From what we’ve heard, it’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in Namibia’s history and nature, all while enjoying the warmth of a cozy camp under the stars.

We didn’t get to visit here since we already saw rock paintings in Spitzkoppe, but we would love to explore here when we return to Namibia!

14) Explore a Safari on a Bush Walk

If a safari from the safety of a vehicle isn’t immersive enough for you, then why not take it to the next level with an African Bush Walk?

On a bush walk, you’re out there on foot, walking the very same terrain as lions and cheetahs, with nothing but your boots and a skilled guide to keep you grounded. It’s a humbling experience that lets you connect with the land on a deeper level, paying attention to the small details of the African wilderness that often go unnoticed.

The goal here isn’t to spot a lion (in fact, you’d prefer not to!) but to immerse yourself in the delicate ecosystem and discover the smaller, often overlooked creatures that make this landscape so special. We got to pickup the skull of a long lost Kudu (and it was really heavy!), identify small insects, learn about the droppings of animals, and much more! It’s a completely different experience than doing a safari in a vehicle, and completely worthwhile!

To experience a bush walk, check out these standout private lodges outside Etosha.

15) See the Hippos in Caprivi

While we didn’t personally get to experience this one, we’ve heard rave reviews from fellow travelers about seeing the hippos at Caprivi, especially while staying at the Chobe Water Villas.

Imagine waking up at a peaceful riverside retreat to the sound of hippos grunting in the distance. From your villa, you can enjoy front-row seats to one of Africa’s most fascinating animals, as the hippos emerge from the water to graze on the lush vegetation. Other than in Caprivi, hippos are found nowhere else in Namibia due to the super dry climate.

We spotted hippos during our safaris in Kruger National Park in South Africa, Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda, and the Serengeti in Tanzania, and they are truly impressive animals. At first, you might not realize just how massive they are, and when they want to, they can move surprisingly fast! At one point, a hippo even chased our boat, which was definitely a heart-pounding moment!

Hippos in the water

In Caprivi, whether you’re sipping a drink on your deck or enjoying a boat safari, the experience of being so close to these incredible creatures is truly unforgettable.

16) Abandoned mining town of Kolmanskop

Kolmanskop is one of those places that feels creepy but at the same time mesmerizing!

Once a bustling diamond mining town in the heart of the Namib Desert, it’s now a ghost town being slowly taken over by sand dunes. Though we didn’t get to visit ourselves, it’s been highly recommended by travelers who described it as both eerie and captivating.

Walking through the abandoned buildings, with sunlight streaming through broken windows and sand piling into every corner, feels like stepping back in time to a once bustling mining colony. We had a similar experience visiting the abandoned nitrate mine in the middle of the Atacama Desert in Chile, and it is hard to describe. On one hand, it is very eerie, yet at the same time, it is fascinating, as if time itself has stood still here.

Guided tours are available at Kolmanskop and provide a deeper understanding of its history, sharing tales of the town’s diamond boom, lavish lifestyles, and ultimate decline. It’s a surreal reminder of how quickly nature can reclaim what was once hers.

17) Quiver Tree Forest

The Quiver Tree Forest near Keetmanshoop is a surreal and iconic destination, especially for star photography.

Quiver Tree Forest in Namibia

These unique trees, actually a species of aloe, got their name because the San people used their hollowed-out branches as quivers for their arrows. By day, you can explore the otherworldly shapes of these ancient giants, and by night, you can marvel at the stunning Milky Way as it frames the spiky silhouettes of the trees perfectly.

It’s one of Namibia’s most magical spots, perfect for photographers and stargazers alike.

18) Fish River Canyon, One of the World’s largest Canyon

Fish River Canyon, one of the world’s largest canyons, is a fascinating site to visit if you get the chance to travel to the southern border of Namibia. The canyon comprises of dramatic cliffs and layered rock formations that seem to stretch endlessly, showcasing millions of years of geological history.

Whether you’re standing at the edge of the viewpoints or hiking along its rugged trails, the sheer scale is absolutely breathtaking. As the sun sets, the canyon comes alive with vibrant hues of orange and gold, making it a dream for photographers. It’s one of Namibia’s most iconic natural wonders.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get the chance to visit here since our Namibia Roadtrip Itinerary focused more on the central areas (between Sossusvlei and Etosha), but we’ve also already seen countless impressive canyons such as the Grand Canyon in Arizona, and Colca Canyon in Peru.

Either way, once we have the chance to return to Namibia, we’ll definitely explore the Fish River Canyon and spend a night at the Fish River Lodge!

Regions to visit on your Namibia Road Trip

These 18 highlight experiences above are scattered across Namibia, and the country is quite large and vast. For this reason, it is important to concentrate on a few specific regions instead of trying to make it to every corner of the country.

2 Weeks in Namibia

If you have about 2 weeks in Namibia, then we would recommend the following regions:

Map of road trip through Namibia with all the highlight stops

🗺️ for full details on how to spend 2 weeks road-tripping this beautiful country, check out our Namibia Itinerary!

3 Weeks in Namibia

If you have an additional week (3 weeks in total), then you can add on one of these options:

  • Twyfelfontain and Damaraland (Wall paintings and desert elephants!)
  • Caprivi region with the hippos
  • Kolmanskop and Fish River Canyon (Abandoned mining town and massive canyon)

It is important to not cram in too much into your itinerary since the driving distances can be long, and the road conditions are not the best. Although Google maps may state the travelling between Windhoek and Sossusvlei takes only 4 hours, but in reality it can easily take a good 5-6 hours due to the bumpy roads.

Roads in Namibia, bumpy

How Much Time to Visit Namibia

We would recommend a minimum of 10 days, but ideally closer to 2 weeks to explore Namibia. The country is vast, with long distances between the main highlight sites, so it is worth dedicating sufficient time to fully enjoy it.

We spent close to 16 days in Namibia and were able to cover Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Spitzkoppe, and Etosha + another private Game Lodge (it’s called Onguma Forest Lodge and it is a Private Game lodge we would highly recommend!)

With our itinerary, we did not have enough time to explore Caprivi for the hippos, Kolmanskop Ghost Town, or Fish River Canyon. This will give you an idea of around how much time you need in Namibia depending on how many places you want to include in your itinerary!

Do you Need a Tour to Travel Namibia

There is a lot at stake when planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Africa to experience a safari. Figuring out the ideal itinerary, determining which safari lodge is right for you, and navigating unfamiliar logistics can feel overwhelming.

After planning our Namibia trip independently and working with a safari tour agency for other parts of Africa, we can confidently say this: Africa is one of the few places where booking through a tour agency is 100% worth it.

It saves time, removes stress, and won’t cost you more — at least with the right agencies (like the ones we trust), since their commission comes from the supplier, not your wallet.

We personally love trip planning and enjoyed organizing our Namibia route. But it was a lot of work, and booking some places was surprisingly tricky. If you’d rather have everything arranged for you, we highly recommend one of Africa’s leading Safari Companies,  Safari.com

They offer an amazing 10-day Namibia self-drive itinerary with pre-booked stops and accommodations — or you can opt for their fully guided 10-day Namibia Highlights tourAll tours are fully customizable based on your travel style.

Choosing the Right Safari Tour Agency

When it comes to a once-in-a-lifetime trip like an African safari, choosing the right tour agency makes all the difference.

Here’s why we trust Safari.com:

Why We Recommend Safari.com

  • 18+ years of experience across top safari destinations like South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Botswana, and more
  • Same price as booking direct — their commission comes from suppliers, not you
  • Strong focus on ethical wildlife tourism
  • All Tours are Private (we highly recommended to go private, it’s worth the extra $$)
  • There to offer you support 24/7, before, during, and after your trip!
  • They won the Africa’s Leading Safari Company Award in 2024 and 2025, celebrating their commitment to excellence, safety, and luxury
  • Includes a travel insurance and financial protection to protect you against unexpected circumstances
  • They have a 4.9/5 rating with 1131 reviews on Trustpilot (with a 96% 5-star rating, the highest in the industry), 5.0 on Tripadvisor and 4.9 on Google

Their 10-day Namibia self-drive itinerary covers all the major highlights: Windhoek, Spitzkoppe, Swakopmund, Sossusvlei, and two incredible private safari lodges: Erindi and Okonjima. While this route doesn’t include Etosha National Park, it’s a practical trade-off to avoid rushing, as Etosha is much farther out.

After doing our own 15-day road trip through Namibia, we feel this shorter itinerary strikes a great balance for those with limited time. This itinerary includes your rental car, handpicked accommodations, and expert support every step of the way.

Using WISE card in Namibia

When taking cash out of an ATM while abroad, you will most likely be charged both a foreign exchange fee and a foreign transaction fee by that country’s ATM. With my Canadian card, this can easily be 3-4$ + 2.75% + a markup on the exchange rate charged by my bank, and then another 3-5$ charged by the foreign ATM.

Wise card

This can be really costly. For this reason, we recommend using WISE card which has only minimal fees and just about no foreign currency exchange markup. This helps me save at least 5-7$ every time I take out money from an ATM. If you want to see our full review of the card showing exactly how WISE can help you save, check out our WISE Travel card Review post.
