Detailed 10-Day Turkey Itinerary

In this itinerary, youโ€™ll be exploring Turkey in a clockwise directionโ€”starting in Cappadocia, heading to the stunning southern Turkish coast, and wrapping up in Istanbul. We chose this route because it lets you kick things off with the more adventurous activities in Cappadocia, then relax and unwind on the coast, and finally end your trip with a few exciting days in Istanbul

With 10 days in Turkey, we recommend flying between Cappadocia, Antalya, and Istanbul instead of driving. This will save you a ton of time, as driving distances between these stops are typically over 8 hours!

Man and woman standing in valley in Cappadocia, one of the most beautiful viewpoints on a 10 day Turkey Itinerary

Overall, we spent just over 2 weeks traveling through Turkey and felt like it was the perfect amount of time. We still ended up missing out on some incredible sites like Ephesus and Gobekli Tepe but I guess itโ€™ll be an excuse to go back one day!

But if you only have 10 days to explore this incredible country, the detailed itinerary below packs in all the highlight experiences from our journey to help you make your trip unforgettable.

🛜📲📶 If you need internet when traveling in Turkey (which you most likely will), we highly recommend checking out Airalo. It is an Esim Service where you can easily download a data plan onto your cellphone and get it running within under a minute! We have used it in over 20 countries now and have always had positive experiences!

Day 1: Arrival at Istanbul and flight to Cappadocia

If you are traveling to Turkey from most international destinations, you will most probably land at IST ฤฐstanbul Havalimanฤฑ Airport. Some travelers will first stop in Istanbul but we highly recommend that you head directly to Cappadocia by taking a local flight.

The reason for this is that going from IST airport to Istanbul city centre is both time-consuming and costly. With the typical traffic, it can take over 1 hour and cost over 40$ per person, one-way. This means that if you stay just one night in Istanbul before going to Cappadocia, youโ€™ll be spending over 160$ for the round-trip transportation.

Sunset in Istanbul Turkey

Instead, after you arrive in IST airport, directly take one of the many Turkish Airlines flights to ASR Kayseri Airport or Nevsehir Airport. The flight takes only 1.5 hours and are available till as late as 8:45pm.

We decided to fly into Kayseri Airport because it offered more flight options and much better car rental rates.

Situation 1: If Flight arrives late at night in Kayseri

If ever you will be arriving in Kayseri late at night, you can always take a quick taxi to stay in downtown Kayseri, only 6-7 minutes from the Airport. This is what we did and spent a night there before picking up our car rental the next morning. This helped us avoid an additional long 1-hour car ride to Goreme after both our international and domestic flights, and was also better for picking up our rental car.

If youโ€™re planning to do the same, we recommend staying overnight at IBIS Kayseri which was super affordable and had a great Turkish breakfast.

Situation 2: If Flight arrives early in the day in Kayseri

If you are able to catch an earlier flight to Kayseri airport, then you can directly arrange your car rental through DiscoverCars and then start your drive to Goreme. We had heard plenty of horror stories about car rental scams in Turkey, so we were determined to choose a trustworthy booking platform.

We ended up reserving two car rentals through DiscoverCars in Turkey and had excellent experiences both times. Whatโ€™s more is that you can add the car insurance directly in the platform at an affordable price, thus avoiding the usual car rental salesman pitch.

Once ready, the car ride from Kayseri to Cappadocia should take around 1 hour

Arrival in Cappadocia

Did you know that Cappadocia isnโ€™t actually a city, but an entire region?

Instead, you should be looking into the actual towns of Cappadocia including Goreme, Uchisar, Urgup, and Avanos. Each town offers its own unique charm and distinct advantages.

Day 2: Hot Air Balloon or Underground cities of Cappadocia

Option 1: Underground Cities (if arriving in Cappadocia on Day 2)

Option 1 applies if you were in Situation 1 above (Late arrival and spending night in Kayseri).

If, like us, you are only renting the car on Day 2 in Kayseri due to a late flight on Day 1, then we recommend spending the day visiting the underground cities of Derinkuyu and/or Kaymakli

Just 30 minutes from Gรถreme, Derinkuyu is one of the worldโ€™s most remarkable underground cities. It once housed over 20,000 people and boasts more than 18 subterranean levels! Exploring the complexity of these cities, the intricate details in each room, and the sheer depth of the tunnel networks was truly a mind-blowing experience.

We visited both Derinkuyu and Kaymaklฤฑ on a single day trip and found that both were definitely worth the visit. Plan to spend around 3-5 hours to fully explore both sites.

Exploring the underground cities of Cappadocia, one of the best things to do during our 10 day Turkey Itinerary

If you prefer going on a guided tour rather than driving yourself, then you can join this Green Tour that includes Derinkuyu underground city and a hike in Ilhara Valley.

Option 2: Hot Air Balloon flight (if Arrived in Cappadocia on Day 1)

Option 2 applies if you were in Situation 2 above, and you slept in Cappadocia on Day 1.

One of the main highlight experiences in Cappadocia is soaring over the enchanting valley in a hot air balloon.

If on Day 1, you were able to arrive early and spend the night in Cappadocia, then we would highly recommend doing the Hot Air Balloon flight today

The reason for this is that oftentimes, the balloon flight can be cancelled due to inclement weather, or even if the wind is just a bit too strong. If that happens, then you will be rescheduled on a subsequent day with availabilities. However, during the busy season, that might not necessarily be tomorrow, but can instead be 2-3 days later.

This happened to us when we went to do the hot air balloon. It was cancelled the first 2 days, and we were rebooked on our 4th day. For this reason, try to do the hot air balloon flight on your first full day in Cappadocia.

Where to Stay in Cappadocia

For your 3-4 days in Cappadocia, it is important to pick the right place to stay.

Each town has its own unique features and is suitable for a specific type of traveler. Most people will stay in Goreme due to the fact that it is the most popular town and most tours start from there, however, we felt like it was over-touristic.

If you want a full breakdown of each town, who it is suited for, and the best cave hotels in each town, then check out our Where to Stay in Cappadocia Guide

Day 3: Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon flight + Open Air Museums

Morning: Hot Air Balloon Flight

If you didnโ€™t get to do the balloon flight on Day 2, then schedule it for Day 3.

The flights start very early in the morning and you will normally be back at your hotel around 9am. There are countless hot air balloon companies you can book with but for us, Turquaz balloons had the best price-quality ratio.

We had 16 people on our flight, soared both high and low over the valley, and spent a total of 75 minutes in the air (flight times are usually 60 minutes for most companies).

woman and man high up in the air in the hot air balloon

We also considered two other top hot air balloon companies: Royal Balloons and Butterfly Balloons. Both have excellent safety records, offer high-quality balloons, and are among the highest-rated companies in the region.

Itโ€™s worth checking them out to see if they align with your priorities. Additionally, itโ€™s always smart to have backup options in case your first choice is fully booked or your flight gets cancelled.

Afternoon: Open Air Museums

After lunch and maybe a nap following your hot air balloon flight, head out to explore some of Cappadociaโ€™s most mesmerizing Open Air Museums.

The most famous is Goreme Open Air Museum, located just a short walk away from Goreme centre.

Alternatively, you can head to Zelve Open Air Museum, around a 10 minute drive from Goreme. We explored both but ended up liking Zelve way more!

At the Zelve Open-Air Museum, you can wander through the perfectly preserved cave dwellings without the large crowds found at the Gรถreme Open-Air Museum.

What sets Zelve apart is its lack of artificial railings, ramps, stairs, and barriers, making the experience feel more immersive, as though youโ€™ve stepped back in time. With three expansive valleys to explore, each filled with cave dwellings carved directly into the rock, we spent 3-4 hours exploring the entire area. It was one of our most memorable experiences in Cappadocia.

Additionally, if you are going by car, you will be able to also explore the nearby Devrent Valley, Pasabag Valley, Imagination Valley, and Cavusin Church.

If you donโ€™t have a rental car, then this can also be done through this Full Day Northern Cappadocia Guided Tour with Lunch and entry tickets

If you are planning on visiting many of the museums in Cappadocia, the Turkish Coast, and Istanbul, then I highly recommend getting the 15 day Turkey Skip-the-line Museum Pass. We ended up purchasing the one for just Cappadocia but it allowed us to avoid the line up to buy the tickets at each attraction, and skip the entrance lineup, saving us a lot of time.

Day 4: Uchisar Castle and hiking for sunset

Morning: Driving or hiking to Uchisar Castle

Today you will be visiting one of the most famous castles in Cappadocia – Uchisar Castle.

Located just 10 minutes drive from Goreme, it makes for a perfect day trip!

Alternatively, instead of driving, you can also hike from Goreme to Uchisar castle through the Pigeon Valley and Love Valley. The hike is around 4.5 km and should take around 2 hours to reach Uchisar Castle. We did the hike and ended up just taking a taxi back after visiting Uchisar since it started to rain hard.

Once there, you can climb up to the top of Uchisar castle for an incredible panoramic view of the valley. After, you can walk around the town and maybe stop for lunch at one of the open terraces providing stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

If you are planning on hiking back, head on the hiking trail north of Uchisar through Love Valley to return to Goreme. The total hike including Pigeon Valley and Love Valley should be around 11km, taking close to 5 hours. Alternatively, you can grab a taxi back or return with your rental car.

If ever you prefer to go with a guided tour to visit Uchisar Castle, Love valley, and more, check out this Red Cappadocia Tour

Afternoon: Hike Red Rose Valley + Sunset

Spend the afternoon discovering the stunning Red valley, Rose Valley, and/or Meskendir Valley. All three valleys can be connected into one single 11km hike, or you can choose to do only 1 or 2 of the sections.

Red Rose Valley Hike Starting Point

We recommend driving to this panoramic viewpoint and parking your car there to start your hike. There used to be Crazy Ali Panorama cafe there but it appears they have permanently closed. This is one of the best panoramic viewpoints in Cappadocia and will be the perfect spot to enjoy sunset after completing your hike.

standing inside one of the cave rooms during our hike in red valley

Hiking Route options

This hike can be done in singular loop sections, each returning back to the same starting point. If you also include the Meskendir Valley though, then the hike will end at this point, and you will need to walk on the main road back to the car parking area.

This is the hike that what we did but overall recommend just doing the Red valley + Rose Valley. The reason for this is that the trail in Meskendir can be very confusing, and adds a significant amount of hiking time to return to your car.

We got lost multiple times due to unclear pathways and signage and had difficulty finding the trail exit. Also, we felt like the views during the hike were more impressive in the Red + Rose Valleys

If you will be doing this trail or others in Cappadocia, we strongly recommend downloading and using an AllTrails map to navigate the hikes.

Sunset Viewpoint after Hike

We ended up hiking back out a little bit on the Red Valley trail to find a quiet spot far from the other crowds and the experience was magical!

Once your hike is complete, enjoy one of the most awe-inspiring sunsets at the panoramic viewpoint.

Day 5: Flight to Antalya and visiting Kas

Morning: Flight to Antalya

Today, youโ€™ll drive back to Kayseri to return your car before heading to the airport for your flight to Antalya.

To reach the Turkish Coast, you have the option of Antalya airport or Dalaman Airport. We chose Antalya since it is one of the main tourist hubs with frequent and affordable daily flights. For direct flights, you can choose from SunExpress and Pegasus Airlines, with a flight time of just 1.5 hours.

We suggest taking one of the early 10am flights since you will still have a good 3.5 hour drive after arriving in Antalya to reach Kas.

Afternoon: Transportation to Kas

Once at Antalya Airport, you will have a few options of transportation to reach Kas

Car Rental in Antalya

We ended up renting a car since we love doing road trips and it also provided us the most flexibility to do the interesting day trips around Kas. To do the trip this way, you will need to pay for a one-way rental as you are picking up the car up in Antalya, and returning in either Fethiye or Dalaman Airport.

Local Bus to Kas

Alternatively, there is the Batฤฑ Antalya bus company minibuses that depart every hour to reach Kas. However, you will need to first make your way to the Antalya Otogari which is another 25 minutes drive from the Airport. There are also no official posted schedules and you cannot purchase your tickets online. In our opinion, this option was overly complicated and more trouble than it was worth.

Private Transfer to Kas

Finally, you can take a private transport with WelcomePickups. We have used their service multiple times and have always had a positive experience. If you will not be renting a car, this is the best option.

Where to Stay in Kas

We stayed at Livia Hotel which was located just a short walk from downtown Kas. They also served an excellent breakfast on their outdoor terrace.

Breakfast in Turkey

Some other alternative hotels we looked up while planning our trip to Kas was Cinar Boutique hotel and Kas Athena Hotel. We are mid-range travelers so usually pick hotels that cost less than 100$ per night.

Day 6 and 7: Exploring Kas and day trips from Kas

You will be spending the next two full days exploring all the amazing activities in Kas. Here, you can step back in time discovering some of the most stunning preserved ancient ruins, relax on a quiet beach with the most spectacular turquoise waters, eat delicious seafood, maybe even try paragliding, and so much more!

For a full overview of the must-do activities there, check out our guide on the 27 best things to do in Kas

If you want a quick example itinerary in Kas, we would recommend the following:

Day 8: Blue Cruise on the Turkish Coast

Today, youโ€™ll have the chance to sail along Turkeyโ€™s breathtaking Turquoise Coast.

During our two-week trip to Turkey, we embarked on a 4-day, 3-night 12 Islands cruise, which turned out to be one of the highlights of our journey. However, with just 10 days in Turkey, youโ€™ll only have time for a full-day tour, which is still an incredible experience.

top picks for full-day Blue cruise tours (departing from Fethiye):

Explore the 12 islands of Fethiye on this full-day tour

Visit Butterfly Valley and 6 islands

If ever you have more time in Turkey and would like to go on the same 4 day 3 night Blue cruise as us, then check out MyBlueCruise. We had an amazing experience with them and would 100% recommend doing this trip!

Where to Stay in Fethiye

You have the option of staying overnight in Fethiye after your blue cruise, or returning back to Kas for one more night. Since you will be heading to Dalaman Airport the next day, I would recommend staying in Fethiye to avoid adding an additional 1.5 hours to your driving time from Kas.

After your cruise, we recommend staying at a hotel close-by to the harbour. These are the two hotels we would recommend:

Day 9: Flight to Istanbul and Explore Istanbul

Start your day early by driving to Dalaman Airport to return your rental car. From there, catch one of the many direct flights (1.5 hours) to either of Istanbulโ€™s airports (IST or SAW). We ended up taking the flight to SAW airport and were able to arrange a private transfer with WelcomePickups to our hotel in Istanbul. The drive from the airport to city centre takes around 1 hour depending on local traffic.

We do not recommend taking an Uber or Taxi in Istanbul after hearing countless horror stories from other travelers and locals. If you want to learn more about the UBER/Taxi situation in Istanbul, and how to get around in Istanbul, check out our Istanbul Uber Guide

Things to do in Istanbul

For your final 2 days in Turkey, you will be exploring the bustling metropolis of Istanbul. Here youโ€™ll get to discover some of the most fascinating mosques, explore the intertwining Asian and European cultures, savour some of Turkeyโ€™s best on a food tour, and much more!

For a full detailed breakdown of how to plan your stay in Istanbul, check out our Istanbul Itinerary Guide!

For a quick example itinerary for today, you can explore Sultanahmed on a tour or on your own to visit the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Hippodrome, Grand Bazaar, and more!

For an in-depth breakdown of how much we spent on our 16 days trip in Turkey, including money-saving tips, check out this post!

Where to Stay in Istanbul

Istanbul is a huge city and where you stay will significantly influence your experience there. We ended up staying in Beyoglu and loved it for several reasons. It is located just north of Sultanahmed, away from the main tourist crowds, was more affordable, but most of all there was a rich variety of restaurants in that neighbourhood.

We explored through Sultanahmed and although it is ideally located close to the main attractions, we felt most of the restaurants were repetitions of the same food.

Sunset in Istanbul Turkey

If you want to stay in Beyoglu, we highly recommend checking out:

Another area you can stay is Kadikoy on the Asian side of Istanbul. This will provide a more authentic and local experience, however we would only recommend it if you are staying in Istanbul for over 4 days since it is a lot further from the main attractions.

Day 10: Food Tour in Istanbul

One of the best ways to discover the culture, history, interesting stories, and best food of a city is through a Food Tour.

This is what we did on our first day in Istanbul and it was a fascinating experience. Not only did we get to see both the European and Asian sides of Istanbul, but we were also brought to lesser-known off-the-beaten path food stands and restaurants.

This gave us an inside look in the lifestyle, culture, and interesting past of Turkey. We even had a chance to have our future read through the coffee grain residues after drinking your Turkish coffee.

Recommended Food Tours

We did the tour with Latif with AirBnB, however here are two other great options for Food Tours:

For more details about the Food tour experience, and other great places to visit in Istanbul, check out our 3 day in Istanbul Guide.

Day 11: Departure from Turkey

And this wraps up your amazing 10 day Turkey trip! Take a private transport to return to IST International Airport (taking around 1 hour) for your departure flight.

How Long do you need in Turkey

Ideally, we would recommend a minimum of 2 weeks to visit Turkey.

With 10 days, you will still be able to experience many of the best attractions in Turkey, however it will be at a quicker pace. The 10 days Turkey travel Itinerary provided above includes all our favourite experiences that we had during our 15 day Turkey Itinerary.

The only thing you are missing out on is the 4 day Turkish Blue Cruise, instead replaced by a single full-day sailing trip.

Sitting on the balcony in Cappadocia watching the sunset with the hot air balloons, during our 10 day Turkey Itinerary

If you have less time: Turkey Itinerary 7 days

If you only have one week in Turkey, then we would remove the Antalya-Kas-Fethiye portion of the trip. It is far to reach, taking a domestic flight followed by a 3-4 hour drive, so it makes more sense to instead concentrate on Istanbul and Cappadocia.

With 7 days, we would suggest spending 4 days in Cappadocia and 3 days in Istanbul.

If you have more time: 2 weeks Turkey Itinerary

If you have 2 weeks or more, then we would highly recommend doing the 4 day Turkish 12 Islands Blue Cruise. We did it during our travel through Turkey and it was one of our highlight experiences!

Alternatively, an area that we wish we had the time to visit was Pamukkale (can be done from Antalya) and Ephesus (can be done from Izmir or Kusadesi).

If you didnโ€™t get to do the hot air balloon in Cappadocia, then you can fly in a hot air balloon over Pamukkale

Another destination we hope to visit someday is Gรถbekli Tepe (Eastern Turkey), an ancient site that has transformed our understanding of human history.

Gobekli Tepe Ancient ruins

Is Turkey Safe to Travel

Overall, Turkey is safe to travel.

We especially felt safe in the more touristic areas like Cappadocia, Antalya, Kas, and central Istanbul. The only time that we felt less safe was regarding the Taxis and Ubers in Istanbul. There are many common scams with taxis and we have also heard that sometimes the drivers can get aggressive.

For this reason, we highly recommend taking a private transport when arriving in Istanbul, and then public transportation to go within the city.

We go into detail about the best ways to get around Istanbul in our Istanbul Transport Guide

Do you Need a Visa to Visit Turkey

Most countries need an E-Visa to enter Turkey. To check your specific countryโ€™s entry conditions, make sure to go to the official Turkey Visa Website.

Multiple third-party websites will try to charge you hefty surcharges to โ€œhelpโ€ you get an E-Visa. Instead, the official Visa website is easy to use, and you will be able to receive your E-Visa within about 2 business days.

Best Time to Visit Turkey

The best time to visit Turkey are during the shoulder months of April, May, and September when the weather is pleasant, but the peak tourist crowds have not yet arrived. During these months, you will also notice that the prices are usually lower than peak season.

These months are also best for the hot air balloon rides in Cappadocia with clear skies, stable winds, and more rescheduling availability in case of cancellations.

We went in late May and had perfect weather!

Do You Tip in Turkey

The short answer is Yes, you need to tip in Turkey. However, it is best to understand how much you need to tip depending on the specific situation, be it at a hammam spa vs. at a restaurant. Check out our full Turkey Tipping Guide

Using WISE card in Turkey

When taking cash out of an ATM while abroad, you will most likely be charged both a foreign exchange fee and a foreign transaction fee by that countryโ€™s ATM. With my Canadian card, this can easily be 3-4$ + 2.75% + a markup on the exchange rate charged by my bank, and then another 3-5$ charged by the foreign ATM.

Wise card

This can be really costly. For this reason, we recommend using WISE card which has only minimal fees and just about no foreign currency exchange markup. This helps me save at least 5-7$ every time I take out money from an ATM. If you want to see our full review of the card showing exactly how WISE can help you save, check out our WISE Travel card Review post.
