Multiple towns of Cappadocia

Cappadocia was made famous in tourism due to the stunning fairy chimneys and views of the hot air balloons soaring over the red and pink valleys. But if you search Cappadocia, you will realize that it is not a city, but actually an entire region that includes

NevลŸehir, Kayseri, Aksaray, KฤฑrลŸehir, Sivas and NiฤŸde

If you are interested in visiting Cappadocia to experience the mesmerizing history and beautiful landscapes, then you will want to look into the following main towns in Cappadocia

  • Goreme
  • Urgup
  • Uchisar
  • Avanos
  • Ortahisar
Woman standing in front of cappadocia valley with camels

At the centre of Cappadocia is Goreme, the main and most touristic town to explore the region. However, make sure to also look into the other towns of Urgup, Uchisar, Avanos, and Ortahisar as they are only a short 5-10 minutes drive away and also have something truly special to offer. So when figuring out where to stay in Cappadocia, donโ€™t search for Cappadocia, but instead search for those towns.

Read on below as we explain the benefits of staying in each town and highlight some of the best hotels there.

Which town to stay in Cappadocia?

Each town in the Cappadocia region offers its own unique features and benefits, catering to different types of experiences. While many travelers choose Gรถreme for its convenience and popularity, we believe itโ€™s worth exploring further to find the town that best suits your needs.

In the sections below, weโ€™ll delve into the highlights of each town to help you decide which one is the perfect fit for your visit.

The different towns that you can stay in Cappadocia including goreme
TownMain Features of the town
GoremeMost touristic but convenient due to proximity to the most important sites and tours, best hot air balloon views
UchisarClassy, upscale, quiet town close to the beautiful Uchisar Castle. Perfect for honeymoon, Amazing view of hot air balloons from Uchisar Castle
UrgupFancy hotels within the quiet winery town, good authentic food
AvanosMost local feel within the pottery town, less fancy, delicious and cheap authentic food, farthest view of the hot air balloons
OrtahisarSmall, quiet town filled with more luxurious hotels, located right between Urgup and Goreme, convenient location

Goreme

Most Popular and Touristic, but closest to all activities

Do you need a car: No. This is one of the few towns that you can fully manage without a car.
Benefits/Features: Very convenient, close to most tours, abundance of restaurants nearby, but very touristic.
Nearby activities: Goreme Open Air Museum, Balloon Launch point, Red Valley
Hot Air balloon views: Likely considered the best hot air balloon views due to its proximity to the launch sites.

Goreme, located at the centre of the Cappadocia region, is likely the town you will hear most often mentioned by travelers. It is the most touristic of the towns, but for good reason as it is located right in the centre of all the historical sites and open-air museums.

If you want convenience and to be close to the action, then Goreme is likely the best place to stay. It is also often recommended as the ideal place to stay for first-time visitors due to its easy access to the starting point for tours.

Night view of Goreme with buildings lit up

However, due to its popularity, there are certain drawbacks that you should be aware of. First, it is very touristic. The streets are filled with many generic souvenir shops with flashy neon signs hanging outside. The restaurants are also catered to tourists so it will be more expensive and a lot harder to find that authentic home-style Turkish food.

We spent some time in Goreme and ended up driving out to the other towns for our meals since it was cheaper and a lot tastier.

In terms of crowd, you will see more backpackers and families here as it is the most known and convenient town.

Uchisar

Classy, upscale, mature town close to Uchisar Castle

Do you need a car: Yes
Distance from Goreme: 9 minutes drive
Features: Classy and more upscale hotels, perfect for a romantic getaway
Nearby activities: Love Valley, Pigeon Valley, Uchisar Castle, a bit closer to the underground cities
Hot Air balloon views: Your views of the hot air balloons will be a bit more distant, however, due to Uchisar being more elevated, you will get to see the balloons floating over the town of Goreme. One of the best ways to view the balloons from Uchisar is from atop Uchisar Castle.

Uchisar, located a short driving distance southwest of Goreme, provides its visitors with a more upscale and classy environment. The town is built on a hill that surrounds the spectacular Uchisar Castle. Here, you will have a more romantic, quiet experience and still be very close to the main attractions.

From Uchisar, you are right beside the Love Valley as well as several of the main hikes. Due to some unexpected rain during our hike, we ended up dining at one of the restaurants which had an incredible terrace overlooking the entire valley. Since the town of Uchisar is located high up on the hill, the views from there were far-reaching and spectacular. As the rain trickled, the staff went out of their way to provide us warm blankets as we sipped on their Turkish Chai.

As you can see, the experience here in Uchisar is quite attentive. In terms of crowd, you will usually see more couples and mature travelers here.

Ortahisar

Mostly fancy hotels in a very quiet town near Ortahisar castle

Do you need a car: Yes
Distance from Goreme: 12 minutes drive
Features: Traditional, not touristic, tranquil atmosphere, same convenience as Goreme in terms of accessing the historical sites
Nearby activities: Close to all the main historical sites
Hot Air balloon views: Ortahisar, similar to Goreme, is located very close to the launching point for the hot air balloons. This usually means that you will get some of the best views as the balloons soar above the valley, especially if you watch it from the top of Ortahisar castle.

Ortahisar is the quietest of the towns in Cappadocia. However, it is perfectly located right between Goreme and Urgup, making it very convenient to reach most of the historical sites.

Here you will find hotels of all ranges that focus on providing an elevated and serene experience. Ortahisar, similar to Uchisar, is also famous for its predominant castle located right at the centre of the city. We feel that Uchisar and Ortahisar provide a relatively similar type of experience, but Uchisar is just a bit more touristic.

Ortahisar castle and city

If you have a car, Ortahisar is incredibly convenient as it is located just a very short drive away from Goreme Open air museum, Meskendir Valley, Red Valley, and the panoramic sunset viewpoint at Crazy Ali Cafe.

Nearby activities: Devrent Valley, Imagination Valley, Zelve Open Air Museum
Hot Air balloon views: As you are located further East, your views of the hot air balloons will be a bit more distant as compared to Goreme.

Urgup is a small town located around a 10-minute drive East of Goreme. Here you will find mostly fancier hotels, providing an upscale Cappadocia experience. Also, the town is known for their wines and wineries made with their local Emir Grapes.

We had the chance to taste their Emir Grape wines which were incredibly delicious and natural. We never knew Turkey even had its own wines so it was a big surprise to us just how much we enjoyed it.

Avanos

Do you need a car: Yes
Distance from Goreme: 12 minutes drive
Features: Local experience, pottery making, wine tasting, cheaper and tastier food, but further from the action
Nearby activities: Pottery making workshop, wine tasting, horseback riding
Hot Air balloon views: As this town is located north of Goreme, away from Urgup, Uchisar, and Ortahisar, Avanos likely has the least specatular views of the Hot Air balloons.

Avanos is located just north of Goreme and is known as the pottery-making town. Here, you will get a far more local and authentic experience as the town is mostly filled with Cappadocia locals.

There are far fewer choices of hotels here, but it is made up by the fact that the food is both delicious and cheap. We ended up visiting Avanos for their pottery-making workshop, wine tasting, as well as a couple of dinners.

Town of Avanos

The locals were very friendly and their Testi Kebab at Dรผrรผmcรผ Ustanฤฑn Yeri was one of the best we tasted in Turkey. Crucial Tips for Choosing the Right Cave Hotel

Most people only have one chance of going to Cappadocia, so you want to make sure you choose the right town and the right hotel. After having gone through it ourselves, here are some crucial tips to help you find the right accommodation.

Woman sitting near Ortahisar Castle

Location of Hotel

When choosing a hotel, we would recommend trying to pick one that is located higher uphill. This will allow you to have a better view of the fairy chimneys, entire town, and the hot air balloons in the morning. Also, usually as you go higher up, you will also be further from the centre of the town so it will be quieter.

Instagram Hotels

There are certain hotels that have become incredibly famous due to the viral instagram photos from their rooftop terrace. We will call them Instagram hotels. Overall, we feel it is preferable to not go to those Instagram hotels since they have already become too popular and they will be swarmed by tourists wanting to get that perfect photo.

From our rooftop terrace at Caftan Cave Suites, we were able to see one of those โ€˜most known rooftop terrace hotelsโ€™ and there was literally a lineup of people waiting to snap the perfect photo. Some people even had professional photographers and videographers and were practically doing an entire commercial shoot.

We were only about 50 feet away and had the terrace all to ourselves. You do not need to pick THE hotel view that you saw on Instagram. Most hotels are only a short distance from each other and will provide a very similar view.

Rooftop Terrace

Try to pick a hotel that has a nice rooftop terrace, including the Turkish Carpets and pillows. I know that it is a bit staged, but it does make the morning hot air balloon view experience more authentic. During the day, it will likely be too hot to sit on the rooftop terrace so it will mainly be used for sunrise and then eating your breakfast.

Multiple terraces at Caftan Cave Suites

Cave Rooms

We highly recommend staying in a cave room vs a standard room or stone room. This is one of the very unique experiences of Cappadocia and you will literally be experiencing their history. Once you get to visit Goreme and Zelve Open Air Museum, you will understand that the cave dwellings were truly used as homes for hundreds of years in the past. And you get to be transported back in time by staying in one of these cave hotels. It is a little bit of a splurge but we would say it is absolutely worth it!

How to get to your hotel in Cappadocia?

Quick Summary of transportation in Cappadocia

Car rental: We went with DiscoverCars twice and had an amazing and seamless experience

Shared Transport: We would recommend this shared transport  (rating 4.7/5 and over 2700 reviews)

Private transport: We have used WelcomePickups many times and they have professional english-speaking drivers

Closest Airport to Cappadocia

To reach the towns of Cappadocia, you will need to fly into either Nevsehir Airport or Kayseri airport. These airports are between 40-60 minutes drive from Goreme, so the choice of which airport you land at will mainly depend on which flights are available from the city from which you are flying from.

When we flew from Istanbul, more flights were going to Kayseri. Kayseri is also a bigger city so there are more car rental options.

Airports around Cappadocia

It is also possible to drive in from Istanbul but it will take around 8 hours.

Kayseri airport is 74km away from Goreme and will take around 1 hour to drive. Nevsehir Airport on the other hand is 44km from Goreme and will take around 40 minutes to reach by car.

Cappadocia Airport to city center

Car rental in Cappadocia

Once at the airport, you have the option of renting a car, or booking a transport service. We ended up booking a car through DiscoverCars since we wanted the freedom of driving ourselves and being able to reach the historical sites without relying on a tour. The rental process was very smooth and we even bought the insurance directly from DiscoverCars at around 11$/day.

Shared Transportation

Alternatively, you can book a shared transport service. We would recommend this shared transport as they have a rating of 4.7/5 and over 2700 reviews.

Private Transportation

If you are a group or would prefer instead to have a private transfer, we would recommend checking out WelcomePickups. We have used them before and they are not only professional, on-time including adjusting for flight delays, but also the drivers speak fluent English.

Using WISE card in Turkey

When taking cash out of an ATM while abroad, you will most likely be charged both a foreign exchange fee and a foreign transaction fee by that countryโ€™s ATM. With my Canadian card, this can easily be 3-4$ from my local bank + 2.75% fee on the withdrawn amount + a markup on the exchange rate charged by my bank + another 3-5$ charged by the foreign ATM.

Wise card

This can be really costly. For this reason, we recommend using WISE card which has only minimal fees and just about no foreign currency exchange markup. This helps me save at least 5-7$ every time I take out money from an ATM. If you want to see our full review of the card showing exactly how WISE can help you save, check out our WISE Travel card Review post.

Do you need to rent a car?

We would highly recommend renting a car as it will give you so much more freedom to visit the historical sites at whatever time of day you please. We rented our car from DiscoverCars and the process went very smoothly. As per our comparison, it is also significantly cheaper than the other Car Rental places.

Save Money 728x90

If you don’t want to rent a car, then we would recommend staying in Goreme. This is due to the convenience as most tours start from there.

Is Cappadocia walkable?

Each town itself is very walkable, however, if you want to go from town to town, or to the historical sites, then you will certainly need transportation. Taxis are available but then there is the issue of where you find a taxi to come back. It is for that reason that we recommend renting a car.

Is Cappadocia expensive to visit?

As you can see, there are hotel prices that range from budget all the way to ultra-luxury. When we visited Cappadocia, we were able to do some at a moderate budget. Hotels were around 100-130$ per night, food was around 40$ per meal per couple, and most activities were free as we had our rented car to bring us there. If you want a full runthrough of how much we spent visiting Turkey and Cappadocia, then check out this Turkey expense breakdown post.

Is Cappadocia safe to visit?

We spent over 5 days in Cappadocia, travelling through all the towns, and always felt safe. We could comfortably walk around town at night, even in the areas that seemed to have few people.
